Sappho's Shroom Service is the brainchild of local Clemsonite, Betz Fisher. Born and raised in the Marshall Islands, Betz moved to South Carolina for university in 2008. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice, Betz put down roots in Clemson, SC and began their career as a court interpreter. In 2025, they attended and completed the Wild Mushroom Food Safety and Certification course at Mushroom Mountain in Easley, SC. After getting certified to forage and sell mushrooms, Betz has had the honor of selling to many Upstate restaurants and businesses, including Fork and Plough, The Blue Heron, Clemson CAFE and The Mushroom Spot.
In the Marshall Islands, the Marshallese culture views the land and sea as our living relatives. Our identity is knit to the soul of Mother Nature. She nourishes us with fish from the sea, and plants from the land. This is the heart of Sappho's Shroom Service. We have a kinship with the earth and every living thing; a sacred and symbiotic bond. This dictates how we forage our wild mushrooms. Betz practices these ethical harvesting principles: respect nature, protect biodiversity and honor local ecosystems. Betz takes only what they need, ensures that rare species are protected and they are gentle with the land. A famous Marshallese proverb says "Jouj eo, mour eo" which translates into English as "kindness sustains existence." Kindness sustains existence, and being kind breathes life into everything we do.
Outside of working in court and foraging in nature, Betz loves to play the guitar, watch movies with their niblings and skate on the rink. Their roller derby name is "Death Cap," the deadliest mushroom in the world. ☠🍄
